Data Acquisition Modules for Geotechnical Instrumentation

data acquisition module

Choosing a data acquisition module for geotechnical work usually comes down to two things: signal compatibility and how easily it fits into an existing monitoring setup. Kingmach approaches this with a range of modules built to read all the common sensor types—vibrating wire, strain gauge, thermistor, potentiometer, you name it. The real headache in the field is when a module can’t handle mixed sensor strings or drifts in harsh conditions. Most of our modules use 24-bit ADCs and can auto-detect sensor types on each channel, which cuts down on wiring mistakes. They also pack enough onboard memory to ride out network outages without losing data. We ship globally and can pre-configure modules for a specific sensor list before delivery.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

Kingmach’s data acquisition modules form the core of monitoring systems for tunnels, dams, slopes, and deep excavations. They are designed for multi-sensor connectivity—vibrating wire, strain, pressure, displacement, temperature, and more—on a single unit. The input channels accept both frequency and voltage signals, with a sampling stability that suits long-term static measurements typical in geotechnics. Most modules support RS-485 and optional Ethernet or 4G for remote access. On the power side, they run off 9–24 V DC and draw under 2 W, which is practical for solar-powered field stations. The housing is IP-rated for dusty and wet environments, and the operating temperature range covers most outdoor sites without extra heating or cooling. Customisation is a big part of what we do: channel count, logging intervals, trigger thresholds, and communication protocol can all be adjusted to match project specs. We also offer modules with built-in surge protection for areas with frequent lightning. Our distribution network covers over 30 countries, and we provide wiring diagrams and remote commissioning support to help get the system running quickly.

FAQ

Common technical questions

What sensor types can Kingmach data acquisition modules read?

Our modules handle vibrating wire, strain gauge, thermistor, potentiometer, 4–20 mA transmitters, and more. Channels are configurable, so one module can mix frequency and voltage inputs. We pre-load sensor calibration data so you get engineering units directly.

How do these modules connect to a central monitoring system?

Standard is RS-485 with Modbus RTU protocol. Many variants also have Ethernet or 4G/3G. The module can push data to a local logger or cloud platform, with configurable reporting intervals. If the link drops, data is buffered in onboard flash.

Can I get a module with a specific channel count or custom enclosure?

Yes, channel count is flexible—we build 4-, 8-, 16-channel versions and can increase that. Enclosure type, connector style, and even internal sensor excitation voltages are customisable. Just send your sensor list and site conditions, and we’ll propose a configuration.

What kind of accuracy and stability can I expect for long-term monitoring?

The 24-bit ADC gives sub-microvolt resolution on voltage channels, and for vibrating wire, the frequency measurement is within 0.01 Hz. Long-term drift is minimal with regular auto-calibration routines. For critical projects, we suggest a yearly check against a reference sensor.

Is technical support available after purchase?

Absolutely. We offer remote setup assistance, wiring review, and troubleshooting. If a module fails in the field, we can often diagnose it remotely and send a replacement quickly from our regional stock.
